Bolsa Chica Wetlands Restoration TIDAL INLET RESTORED! For the first time in more than 100 years, the ocean
flowed directly into the historic wetlands at Bolsa Chica. The opening of the tidal inlet, which took place during the wee hours of the morning on August 24, 2006, is the
culmination of thirty years of work by environmental activists and local residents.
The event capped a two-year project by eight state and federal agencies including the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the California State Lands Commission, and the California Department of Fish and Game to restore nearly 600 acres of wetlands at Bolsa Chica.
With 95% of California's coastal wetlands lost to development, the establishment of
these restored wetlands will provide significant habitat for the more than 200 bird species, including the six endangered or threatened species, at Bolsa Chica.
