Heroes of Bolsa Chica

Jim Sadler - our computer king

Jim worked for McDonald Douglas/ Boeing for 39 years, and retired in 2001. While reading the "Music from the Mesa" he noticed a plea for help with our database.

"Having played with database and computers for years, I felt I was uniquely qualified to help," Jim says.

So he called the Trust and offered his assistance.

And that was the beginning of the Bolsa Chica Land Trust coming of age in the computer world.  Jim built our membership/management software; he trains our office volunteers and he continually updates our computer system.

Jim and Ruth moved to Fullerton in 2006, but Jim still manages to come to the office every other Friday to keep an eye on things. Jim, we are so ever grateful for your volunteer spirit and generosity of your time.

P.S. Boeing still calls Jim to come back to work and take care of Boeing, too.

Dick LeGrue
1935 to 2006

The idea of wilderness needs no defense.
    It only needs more defenders.

      ~ Edward Abbey

It is no accident that Edward Abbey was Dick LeGrue's favorite author. Abbey was a passionate environmental advocate who voiced the belief that the West was in danger of being developed to death, and that the only solution lay in the preservation of wilderness.

You couldn't find a better description of Dick LeGrue.

Dick was a member of the Bolsa Chica Land Trust for thirteen years.  He served on the Trust's Board of Directors and edited and published "Music from the Mesa", raising it to the professional standard it enjoys today. For the past five years he was also in charge of the Land Trust's email list known as "the Advocates", and was instrumental in getting important, last-minute communications out to members regarding public hearings and other Land Trust activities.

In 1999, he coordinated the production of "Celebrate the Bolsa Chica", a book of poetry and local history that has been widely read and is still sold by the Land Trust today.

The Land Trust's annual sunrise celebration on the Bolsa Chica Mesa was initiated by Dick, as was the Kennedy-Kolpin Conservation Award, presented each New Year's Day to a volunteer who had made an outstanding contribution to the restoration of the lower bench.

This lovely, intelligent artistic, dedicated man will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The Land Trust will install a bench in his memory at Bolsa Chica.
